DIRECTIONS & RULES FOR THE READING CHALLENGE
- Head to the Library and sign up for the Reading Challenge with a volunteer at the front desk, and obtain a Reading Challenge Tracking Card. Sign up anytime, during staffed Library hours, from May 20th through September 20th. (If you sign up after May 20th, you may still count any qualifying books you’ve read since the start of the Reading Challenge on May 20th.)
- Track your reading on the Tracking Card (for each book read, fill in the book title, author, and number of pages, and circle NF or HF (Non-Fiction or Historical Fiction) on your card. Tracking is as easy as that!
- If you read more books than you can track on one card, additional cards will be available in the Library during staffed hours.
- Read traditional books, e-books, or audio books--they all count! We are counting pages, rather than books read. That will level the playing field! Read a long book, read a short book--your choice! So what’s a “page count”? It’s the last numbered page of text that you read in the book. Your reported page count should not include the Notes, Index, or other items typically found at the end of non-fiction books. If you don’t finish the book, record the last numbered page you completed.
- What books will count for the Reading Challenge? Read any book that gives you a better understanding of our nation’s history. For Non-Fiction titles, it might be a history of a specific place in the United States, a person, an incident, a time period, etc. For a Historical Fiction selection, choose a book that is based on, or inspired by, a real person or event from America’s history or that helps you gain a sense of the way things were in a particular period of our country’s history. Books read prior to May 20th do not count. Books can be obtained from anywhere—the RR Library, public libraries, purchased or borrowed.
- There will be a Suggested List of Books in the Library offering ideas on what to read.
- Those who attend the Book Discussion in the Library on Wednesday, May 20th (6:30 to 8:00 p.m.) will receive a Special Bonus.
- All completed Tracking Cards must be returned in the Library before or by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25.
- Everything will be on the HONOR SYSTEM.
